Philip Brave Davis responds to Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham following rally in San Salvador

Statement By Philip 'Brave' Davis
Cat Island, Rum Cay and San Salvador MP
Deputy Leader of the Progressive Liberal Party
3rd Feb, 2012

Desperate to hold onto power as he counts his final weeks as leader of The Bahamas, Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham carried his campaign of lies to San Salvador to mislead the Bahamian people on the accomplishments this MP and the PLP government.

It is painfully clear that the Prime Minister has forgotten the state in which he left San Salvador back in 2001. The people of San Salvador have not forgotten.

Back then the major resort on the island had closed its doors. Scores of workers were left unemployed and businesses had to close shop during the FNM’s term.

What San Salvadorans will not forget is that it was my efforts with the support of the Christie led PLP, which quickly entered into discussions to reopen the Club Med Resort and bring employment back to the island. The PLP government facilitated full employment on the island of San Salvador.

The Prime Minister forgot that the same airport terminal he walked through yesterday was completed and opened during that same period. Flights with thousands of tourists returned to San Salvador because of the work of the PLP government.

With the tourism industry restored, businesses were revitalized and San Salvadorans went back to work.

The PLP Government reopened San Salvador to the world.

The people of San Salvador have not forgotten the FNM’s failure to provide potable water and shelved the architectural drawings for the construction of a primary and a secondary school in San Salvador left in place by the PLP government.

Further, the PLP government completed major infrastructure works on Cat Island including the construction of sea walls, roads and constructed a docking facility. The PLP government secured funding through the European Union (EU) to build a new airport terminal and refurbish the runway. After promising the people of Cat Island to complete the airport project through the funding of the EU, the Prime Minister failed to deliver.

This uncaring government has not repaired the public school damaged by Hurricane Irene. Our children need to be educated in a comfortable and safe environment.

After failing the people of Cat Island, Rum Cay and San Salvador, the Prime Minister has the temerity to show his face in San Salvador with lies, lies and more lies. He should be begging for forgiveness for his abject neglect and failure to put Bahamians first.

He must answer to the Bahamian people for the soaring rate of crime, record levels of unemployment and the poorly managed economy he delivered to the Bahamian people across the Bahamas in five short years.

Mr. Ingraham believes the people of the Bahamas will forget his failure to attract a single major investment to The Bahamas since coming to power in 2007. His government’s failure to put Bahamians first through the delivery of higher taxes, high unemployment, his silence on the growing mortgage crisis and the incredibly high national debt have made life unbearable for Bahamians.

The Prime Minister should rather come to grips with the fact that his government has failed to believe in the people of The Bahamas, failed to put Bahamians first and they will soon give him his report card.
