After nearly a month idle due to mechanical problems, Discovery Sun resumed its scheduled trips plying between Ft Lauderdale and Grand Bahama on May 2.

Discovery Cruises resumed service May 2, 2009The ship left Ft Lauderdale's port at 7:32 a.m. Saturday with 517 passengers aboard, about half of its potential capacity.

The cruise liner was unexpectedly taken out of service April 5, 2009 when it encountered serious engine trouble and could no longer sustain its grueling six-days-a-week schedule. The low-cost cruise is popular with Bahamas residents and visitors, with a major portion of spring break and summer travel to Grand Bahama choosing Discovery over more expensive air options.

The cruise company faced several difficult days and came under heavy media criticism following its suspension of service, being charged with 'stranding' passengers on both sides of its route. But the company did respond by offering refunds, re-booking at no additional fee and assisting with providing travel alternatives to those affected by the interruption of service.

The company sustained losses in the hundreds of thousands of dollars during the haitus, even sparking rumours that it may not return. But the company maintained its plans to recommence its service on which many Bahamians and visitors rely.

Discovery Cruise offers day travel with fully-equipped cabins, food service, entertainment and activites on board the ship.
