The Bahamas is a destination for all kinds of people. In our history we have attracted pirates and kings, playboys and presidents, celebrities and refugees, and criminals and millionaires (and all the various conglomerations of those descriptions that you can imagine!). People come to the Bahamas to live, to vacation, to retire and to invest. Some are leaving behind tax regimes and others are looking for new investment opportunities. The Bahamas offers a warm climate, a stable government, most technical standards of North America (e.g. electrical), and is in convenient close proximity to millions of people. Kerzner spent over $200 million to build nearly 500 vacation homes on Paradise Island targeting second-home buyers. Ginn Sur Mer is intended to attract thousands of second home buyers to its 2,000 acre site in Western Grand Bahama. Abaco boasts hundreds of homes owned by second home expatriates. Our government recognises the importance of second home buyers, even creating an investment incentive offering residency to anyone investing half a million dollars into a home in the Bahamas. Besides the massive developments specifically aimed at new second home buyers, many expatriates have bought homes and condominiums in the country individually. They will spend a few weeks or months in the Bahamas -- usually between November and March -- and often rent their homes and condos to others the rest of the year. Many second home buyers have a few challenges to meet when they own a home or condo in the Bahamas. Their property (and vehicles and/or boats) need to be checked regularly. Maintenance needs to be carried out. Tenants need attention. Utility and maintenance bills need paying and checking. And when they are returning to the island for their short- or long-term visits they often need help stocking the cupboards and reactivating services that may have been dormant in their absence. To service these needs a company was re-launched last week that helps coordinate rentals, deals with utilities and maintenance, makes arrangements for repairs and monitoring, and general property management services. That company, Barefoot Locations -- fully licensed for property management, has been in existence for several years and has now launched a new web site. For any second home owners or those that would rather not deal with the day-to-day bother of renting and managing their property, Barefoot Locations offers many services that can meet those needs.  Twitteriffic! Less than two months after the formal re-launching of our Twitter-based news headlines service we have topped more than 300 followers from around the world. Adding new followers at a rate of more than five and half every day, this service delivers free Bahamas-related news headlines, links and updates about upcoming events in the Bahamas.For the uninitiated, Twitter is a short text-based online social messaging service. You create a list of 'followers' that receive your updates, and others join your following list so they can keep up to date with your messages. Our Twitter feed (@bahamasnews) is updated every day whenever a new story breaks. You'll receive the headline and direct link to the story often just seconds after the story is available online. One recent example was the Miss Bahamas pageant held this past Sunday. When Kiara Sherman was announced as the winner, our Twitter followers around the world knew the winner less than 30 seconds after it was announced live on TV. We see the impact our Twitter feed has had on our readership numbers. Any story that we link to on Twitter will see readership rates three to four times higher than those that are not posted there. Also, Twitter users can follow specific topics on the public stream of 'tweets' (which is what Twitter messages are called). So, for example, someone that may be planning a visit to the Bahamas or that may be considering an investment in the country can monitor all tweets that mention the Bahamas. I applaud the decision to offer ex-patriots residency permits. However, the vast majority of potential residents do not have that much capital to invest in a 2nd home. Think of the thousands more that would come and buy/build houses if the requirement was lowered to $50,000 or $100,000, and the ex-pats would have to prove they had a source of income that could sustain them without working in the Bahamas.

Whats the big deal with Barefoot Locations? There are already many property management companies in existence in the Bahamas full filling all the services you say Barefoot will. Where there are no management companies individuals Bahamians fullfill all of these needs. Was this article an advert for Barefoot Locations?

Vacation rental/property managers like Barefoot perform a very valuable service. But all those property owners should know that, thanks to the Internet, paying a property management company is no longer their only option.
You really can do it all (or just some of it) yourself. And you really can reduce or completely eliminate management company commissions.
