Alexander Flowers, Family Island Administrator, has assumed responsibility as the Director of the Department of Lands and Surveys effective Monday, November 16.

Mr Flowers entered the public service in 1972 as a teacher.  He has served as a Family Island teacher and principal at Crown Haven, Abaco, Barraterre and the Forest, Exuma and Deep Creek, South Andros.

In 1982 he was transferred to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Family Island Affairs and appointed an Assistant Commissioner.

He moved up the ranks to Senior Commissioner and in 1996 became a Senior Deputy Family Island Administrator in 1997.

Mr Flowers has served in the Districts of North Central and South Abaco, West, East and the City of Freeport, Grand Bahama, Bimini and the Berry Islands, Central and South Andros, North Eleuthera, Cat Island, Long Island, Exuma, Ragged Island and the Exuma Cays, San Salvador and Rum Cay, Mayaguana, Acklins and Inagua.

In 2007, Mr Flowers was assigned to the Department of Lands and Local Government Headquarters and was instrumental in establishing an Internal Monitoring Unit. 

This Unit is responsible for ensuring that public funds allocated to Local Government Districts are spent in conformity to the provisions of Financial Administration and Audit Act and the Local Government Act.

He also coordinated the training schedule for 11 newly appointed Family Islands Administrators; who recently completed the training and were posted to the Family Island Districts.

Mr Flowers received his high school education at St John’s College, Nassau Teacher Certification from the San Salvador Teacher’s College and the University of the West Indies, an Associate of Arts Degree in Public Administration from The College of The Bahamas and a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Management from the University of Phoenix, Arizona.

He is married to Nursing Officer, Ernestine Flowers.
