NEMA issues Tropical Storm Alert for Southeast Bahamas in advance of TS Maria

ALERT #1 ISSUED BY THE BAHAMAS DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY, Friday, September 9, 2011 AT 6 P.M.

A TROPICAL STORM ALERT IS NOW IN EFFECT FOR MAYAGUANA IN THE SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS AND THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS

AN ALERT MEANS THAT TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS ARE POSSIBLE GENERALLY WITHIN 60 HOURS FOR THE MENTIONED ISLANDS.

AT 5:00 P.M.THE CENTER OF THE TROPICAL STORM MARIA WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 14.8 DEGREES NORTH AND LONGITUDE 58.6 DEGREES WEST OR ABOUT 125 MILES NORTH-NORTHEAST OF BARBADOS AND 945 MILES SOUTHEAST OF THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLAND.

MARIA IS MOVING TOWARD THE NORTHWEST NEAR 16-MILES PER HOUR AND THIS MOTION IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE DURING THE NEXT DAY OR SO.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 45 MILES PER HOUR WITH HIGHER GUSTS. SLIGHT STRENGTHENING IS FORECAST DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS.

RESIDENTS IN MAYAGUANA AND THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS SHOULD CLOSELY MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF THIS STORM OVER THE WEEK-END AND BE READY TO TAKE QUICK ACTION SHOULD THE NEED ARISE.

SMALL CRAFT OPERATORS IN THE SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS SHOULD ALSO MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF MARIA AND BE PREPARED TO SEEK SAFE HARBOUR WHEN ASK TO DO SO.
