GENERAL SITUATION: A STATIONARY FRONT CONTINUES TO LINGER ACROSS THE CENTRAL BAHAMAS PRODUCING CLOUDY SKIES FROM THE MIDDLE EXUMA CHAIN TO ACKLINS AND CROOKED ISLAND…MEANWHILE STRONG HIGH PRESSURE EXPANDING ACROSS THE AREA WILL CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN STRONG NORTHEASTERLY WINDS ACROSS THE ISLANDS THROUGH TONIGHT.

OUTLOOK FOR THE BAHAMAS FOR  WEDNESDAY: A MIX OF SUN AND CLOUDS AND CONTINUING BREEZY TO WINDY WITH A PASSING SHOWER OR TWO POSSIBLE.

ALERT #1 ISSUED BY THE BAHAMAS DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY, Friday, September 9, 2011 AT 6 P.M.

A TROPICAL STORM ALERT IS NOW IN EFFECT FOR MAYAGUANA IN THE SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS AND THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS

AN ALERT MEANS THAT TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS ARE POSSIBLE GENERALLY WITHIN 60 HOURS FOR THE MENTIONED ISLANDS.

AT 5:00 P.M.THE CENTER OF THE TROPICAL STORM MARIA WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 14.8 DEGREES NORTH AND LONGITUDE 58.6 DEGREES WEST OR ABOUT 125 MILES NORTH-NORTHEAST OF BARBADOS AND 945 MILES SOUTHEAST OF THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLAND.

Deja vu: Maria's projected track to take it over the Bahamas, echoing Irene

(WLTX) - The official track of Tropical Storm Maria shifted significantly south Thursday, meaning it could be more of a threat to strike the U.S. next week.

As of the 2 p.m. Thursday advisory, Maria had maximum sustained winds of 40 miles an hour, which is down from earlier in the day. The system was moving to the west at 22 miles an hour.

Right now, Maria is not experiencing favorable conditions for intensification, so it may not reach hurricane status anytime soon, if at all.

The official track of the storm is a little more of a concern that it was earlier. Now, the path of the Maria is expected to go over the Lesser Antilles, and by next Tuesday, it could be over the Bahamas. Earlier forecast had the storm moving north of the Bahamas.
