THIS IS ALERT #10 ON TROPICAL STORM TOMAS, ISSUED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY FORECAST OFFICE SECTION AT MIDNIGHT FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 5th, 2010.

TOMAS IS STRENGTHENING AS IT MOVES NORTH-NORTHEASTWARD TOWARD EASTERN JAMAICA AND WESTERN HAITI. TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS NOW OCCURING ALONG THE SOUTHWESTERN COAST OF HAITI.

HURRICANE WARNINGS ARE IN EFFECT FOR THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS AND THE SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS WHICH INCLUDES THE ISLANDS OF: INAGUA, MAYAGUANA, LONG CAY, ACKLINS, CROOKED AND RAGGED ISLANDS.                                                                                               
A HURRICANE WARNING MEANS THAT HURRICANE CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED IN THE WARNING AREA GENERALLY WITHIN 36 HOURS.

AT 11:00 PM, THE CENTER OF TOMAS WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 17.3°N AND LONGITUDE 75.5°W OR ABOUT 386 NAUTICAL MILES SOUTHWEST OFF ABRAHAM’S BAY, MAYAGUANA, 365 NAUTICAL MILES SOUTHWEST OF PROVIDENCIALES, TURKS AND CACIOS ISLANDS AND 230 NAUTICAL MILES WEST-SOUTHWEST OF PORT AU PRINCE HAITI.

TOMAS IS MOVING NORTH-NORTHEAST AT 9 MPH (13KM/HR) A TURN TOWARDS THE NORTHEAST WITH AN INCREASE IN FORWARD SPEED IS EXPECTED OVER THE NEXT 48 HOURS. ON THE FORECAST TRACK, THE CENTER OF TOMAS WILL PASS NEAR EASTERN JAMAICA OR WESTERN HAITI TONIGHT AND EARLY FRIDAY, NEAR OR OVER EXTREME EASTERN CUBA FRIDAY AFTERNOON AND NEAR OR OVER THE SOUTHEASTERN BAHAMAS AND THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS FRIDAY NIGHT.

RECENT REPORTS FROM NOAA HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT INDICATE THAT MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE INCREASED TO NEAR 65 MPH WIITH HIGHER GUSTS. ADDITIONAL STRENGTHENING IS FORECAST DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS AND TOMAS COULD BECOME A HURRICANE ON FRIDAY AS THE CENTER PASSES HAITI, EASTERN CUBA AND THE SOUTHEASTERN BAHAMAS. TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 140-MILES  (195KM) MAINLY TO THE EAST OF CENTER.

RESIDENTS IN THE SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS AND THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS MAY EXPECT STORM SURGE, RAISING WATER LEVELS BY AS MUCH AS 1 TO 3 FEET ABOVE NORMAL TIDE LEVELS ACCOMPANIED BY LARGE AND DESTRUCTIVE WAVES ON COASTLINES. RAINFALL TOTALS OF 3 TO 5 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE OVER THE ISLANDS. RESIDENTS IN THE WARNING AREAS SHOULD HAVE COMPLETED PREPRATIONS TO SECURE LIFE AND PROPERTY.  SMALL CRAFT OPERATORS WITHIN THE WARNING AREAS SHOULD REMAIN IN PORT.

RESIDENTS IN THE NORTHWEST AND CENTRAL BAHAMAS SHOULD GO ABOUT THEIR NORMAL BUSINESS.
