Hurricane Tomas passing between Haiti and Cuba; update at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov 5

THIS IS ALERT #15 ON HURRICANE TOMAS, ISSUED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY FORECAST OFFICE SECTION AT 3:00PM, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 5th, 2010.

Hurricane Tomas at 3:00 p.m. Nov 5 2010

THE CENTER OF TOMAS IS NOW PASSING BETWEEN HAITI AND SOUTHEASTERN CUBA.

HURRICANE WARNINGS REMAIN IN EFFECT FOR THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS AND THE SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS WHICH INCLUDES THE ISLANDS OF: INAGUA, MAYAGUANA, LONG CAY, ACKLINS, CROOKED, AND RAGGED ISLANDS.

A HURRICANE WARNING MEANS THAT HURRICANE CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED IN THE WARNING AREAS WITHIN 36 HOURS.

A TROPICAL STORM WARNING IS NOW IN EFFECT FOR LONG ISLAND, RUM CAY AND SAN SALVADOR.


A TROPICAL STORM WARNING MEANS THAT TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS COULD AFFECT THE WARNING AREAS WITHIN 36 HOURS.

AT 2:00PM THE CENTER OF TOMAS WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 19.8°N AND LONGITUDE 74.0°W OR ABOUT 90 MILES SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OFF MATTHEW TOWN, INAGUA; 184 MILES SOUTHWEST OF PROVIDENCIALES, TURKS AND CACIOS ISLANDS AND 192 MILES SOUTHWEST OF ABRAHAM’S BAY, MAYAGUANA.

TOMAS IS MOVING NORTH-NORTHEAST AT 12 MPH.  THIS GENERAL MOTION IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE WITH SOME INCREASE IN FORWARD SPEED DURING THE NEXT 24 TO 36 HOURS.  ON THE FORECAST TRACK, THE CENTER OF TOMAS WILL PASS BETWEEN NORTHWESTERN HAITI AND EXTREME EASTERN CUBA DURING THE NEXT FEW HOURS AND OVER THE SOUTHEASTERN BAHAMAS AND THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS TONIGHT OR EARLY SATURDAY.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 85 MPH WITH HIGHER GUSTS. TOMAS IS A CATEGORY ONE HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON SCALE.  SOME STRENGTHENING IS POSSIBLE THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT …FOLLOWED BY A WEAKENING TREND BEGINNING ON SATURDAY.

HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 15 MILES FROM THE CENTER AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 140 MILES MAINLY TO THE EAST OF THE CENTER.  HEAVY SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WITH POSSIBLE TORNADOES ARE LIKELY ALONG WITH LOCALIZED FLOODING AND STORM SURGE IS EXPECTED WITH THIS HURRICANE.

RESIDENTS IN THE SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS AND THE TURKS AND CAICOS SHOULD HAVE ALREADY COMPLETED PREPARATION FOR THE STORM AND SETTLED IN SAFE SHELTERS. SMALL CRAFT OPERATORS WITHIN THE WARNING AREAS SHOULD REMAIN IN PORT. RESIDENTS IN THE NORTHWEST AND THE REMAINDER OF THE CENTRAL BAHAMAS SHOULD GO ABOUT THEIR NORMAL BUSINESS.
